Various international sports events here this year

KUCHING: Holding international sports events in the state have clearly benefitted many downstream economic activities.

The service sector comprising the accommodation and transportation providers, food and entertainment outlets, retails and shopping centres all stand to gain from these international events.

Hence, the state government will have more international sports event coming up later this year due to Sarawak having world class venue such as Badminton courts, Aquatic Centers, Bowling alleys and more.

Upcoming events that will be held in the state includes the Sarawak Chief Minister Borneo Cup International Taekwando Championship (July), 31st Malaysian International Open Masters Athletics Championship (July), International Ten Pin Bowling (September), Siol International Mountain Bike Challenge Kuching (November), Master Swimming Championship (December) and Kuching City International Dart Championship (December).

“By organising these international sports events, our local Sporting Associations also stand to benefit through exposing their technical officials, judges as well as collaborations with international class technical team,” said Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in his winding up speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), yesterday.

Previous international sport events that had been organised this year were the Victor Far East Malaysia Masters Badminton Tournament (January), 3rd Southeast Asia Cup Squash Championship (February), Tun Sharifah Rodziah Women’s Football Cup Championship (April) and Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open (April).
