KUCHING: The government wants more graduates to become job creators rather than job seekers, said Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat.

Speaking to reporters at the Sarawak Sports Village following the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Youth Business Idea Competition (SaYBIC) 2025/2026 on Sunday (June 21), Ripin said the programme was focused on engagement between the ministry, entrepreneur development efforts, and students from public and private institutions of higher learning (IPTA and IPTS).

“We want to create awareness to nurture the talent and interest of youth in IPTA and IPTS to venture into entrepreneurship, so that it can become a career after they complete their formal studies, or even something they pursue part-time while studying,” he said.

He added that the goal was to produce more job creators, rather than graduates who only depend on securing employment in the government or private sector.

Ripin thanked Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for his support in expanding such programmes for youth at the tertiary level.
