KUCHING: Air quality in Sarawak continues to face significant pressure, with Lundu and Serian registering ‘Very Unhealthy’ Air Pollutant Index (API) levels as of 10 am today.
According to data released by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak, Lundu recorded an API of 224, followed closely by Serian at 214.
An API reading between 201 and 300 is classified as ‘Very Unhealthy’, which can severely worsen existing health conditions and lower physical exercise tolerance among high-risk groups, particularly individuals with heart and lung complications, while posing general health risks to the wider public.
The majority of monitoring stations across the state remain blanketed in the ‘Unhealthy’ category (API 101–200). Lubok Antu logged an API of 187, followed by Samarahan (185), Kuching (184), Tebedu (175), Sarikei (173), Sri Aman (171), and ILP Miri (171).
Other areas recording unhealthy levels include Samalaju (168), Betong MCAQM (163), Bintulu (155), Mukah (154), Kanowit (150), and Miri (131).
Only four locations recorded air quality below the unhealthy threshold. Sibu, Lawas, Kapit, and Limbang recorded ‘Moderate’ readings of 97, 96, 91, and 88, respectively.
Bario remained the sole area in Sarawak enjoying ‘Good’ air quality with an API reading of 37.
Members of the public, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular issues, are advised to limit outdoor physical activities, stay hydrated, and take necessary health precautions as conditions persist.
