MIRI: Hazard signs will be put up near hotspots to prevent water-related incidents, says Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Mohammad Hamdan Wahid.
“For this purpose, we will seek the Local Authorities’ (PBT) help to put up safety signs to alert people patronising the locations,” he said.
He added that high risk locations had been identified.
“We will use infographic signs for the purpose so that the public understand them better,” he said.
He said this during a press conference after attending the fire safety training with Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd-Sarawak Oil (SK Oil) at Eastwood Valley Country Club here yesterday.
Fifty community leaders from Miri, Lawas , Marudi, Telang Usan, Mulu as well as longhouses and settlements located along the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline Project (SSPG) in Sarawak attended the three-day programme.
Hamdan pointed out that fire prevention strategy was important for any risk management, including fire incidents in longhouses.
He added the number of fire incidents in longhouses had dropped significantly this year.
Hamdan, however, did not disclose the statistics.
“Proper training helps eliminate hazards…to respond swiftly and efficiently if a fire breaks out,” he opined, adding that such awareness programme would be continued.
“This year, we received 110,000 emergency calls nationwide, and over 40,000 were fire related, while the rest involved rescue,” he said.
Also present were Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director (fire safety) Edwin Galan Teruki, Sarawak Fire and Rescue department director Khiruddin Drahman and Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong.
