MIRI: Water supply has been fully restored across all affected areas in Miri following the successful repair of a 1,100mm-diameter main pipeline at Mile 7 along the Miri-Bintulu Road.
The completion of the repair works brings an end to several days of water disruptions that affected households, businesses, schools, hospitals and other institutions throughout the city.
In a statement, Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the successful restoration was made possible through the collective efforts of government agencies, utility providers, community organisations, frontliners, volunteers, media partners and members of the public.
He said the incident highlighted the strong spirit of cooperation, commitment and unity among all parties involved in managing the disruption and restoring water supply to consumers.
While advance notice had been given and consumers were advised to store sufficient water before the planned repair works began, Lee acknowledged the inconvenience experienced by residents, businesses and institutions during the interruption.
Throughout the operations, he closely monitored developments by maintaining regular communication with Sarawak Water and relevant agencies.
He also visited the repair site, water distribution points and affected locations to assess the situation firsthand and meet with residents as well as personnel on duty.
Lee commended the dedication shown by workers and responding agencies, noting that many worked continuously day and night under challenging conditions to ensure the repairs were completed as quickly and safely as possible.
He said that heavy rainfall during the operations had slowed progress and created additional technical and engineering challenges.
Despite the adverse weather and muddy conditions at the work site, repair crews remained committed to completing the task and restoring supply to consumers without unnecessary delay.
Lee also expressed his appreciation to Sarawak Water for spearheading the repair and restoration efforts, as well as the many agencies and organisations that contributed throughout the operations.
Among those involved were the Department of Rural Water Supply (JBALB), Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Public Works Department (PWD), Sarawak Energy Bhd, Miri Resident’s Office, Miri District Office, Miri District Education Office, Miri City Council (MCC), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS), Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Miri Hospital, media organisations, volunteers and members of the public.
Lee noted that every individual involved played an important role in the success of the operations, whether as engineers, technicians, contractors, enforcement officers, emergency responders, healthcare personnel, administrators, community leaders, media practitioners or volunteers.
He also thanked the people of Miri for their patience, understanding and cooperation throughout the disruption and restoration process.
According to him, the experience once again demonstrated that challenges can be overcome when government agencies, service providers, community organisations and the public work together towards a common goal.
