KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, has described himself as a “working mayor”, saying it is his responsibility to move around areas under the council’s jurisdiction and oversee development efforts on the ground.
“You all know that I am a working mayor. I move around all the places,” he said when met by reporters after the launch of the Bintawa roundabout beautification project here today (April 30).
Wee made the remarks when asked whether his frequent appearances in areas such as Pending indicated plans to contest in the upcoming state election.
According to him, similar assumptions are often made whenever he visits different areas under MBKS administration.
“When I go to Padungan, people say I want to contest there. This morning I went to India Street. Why not say I want to contest there as well?” he said jokingly.
Wee stressed that it was his duty as mayor to oversee all areas under MBKS rather than focus on only one location.
He said the council had carried out various upgrading and beautification initiatives beginning in Padungan before extending efforts to areas such as Bintawa, Pending and Kenyalang Park.
Wee is also the Pending Deputy Chairman of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP).
He previously contested the Padungan seat under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) banner, but lost to Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate, Chong Chieng Jen.
