SIBU: The proposed west bank project, which is expected to improve connectivity between Sibu town and the rapidly developing western bank area, has entered the site study and planning stage to determine the most suitable alignment.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Chieng Jin Ek said technical assessments are currently underway to evaluate connection points and identify an appropriate bridge design before the project can move forward.

He said different bridge designs would have varying implications on the length of connecting roads required and could potentially affect nearby land and residential areas.

“As such, detailed studies and coordination are essential before any implementation can be expedited,” he said.

He said this when delivering a speech on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at a Parents’ Day and senior citizens appreciation dinner here on Wednesday (May 27) as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

Chieng said the idea for the bridge was first proposed last year by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch chairman Kevin Lau Kor Jie.

The proposal subsequently gained momentum after Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg directed Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee and Pelawan assemblyman Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee to coordinate follow-up studies on the project.

“The infrastructure project is crucial as the western bank area continues to experience rapid growth but faces transportation and road connectivity challenges due to the expansion of residential, commercial and agricultural zones,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chieng also provided an update on the Rantau Panjang Emergency Water Filtration System Project, which has achieved approximately 33 to 34 per cent physical progress.

The project is expected to be fully completed by November and will benefit shipyard areas, schools, longhouses and nearby residential communities.

“It follows the success of the Sungai Sadit Emergency Water Treatment System, which is now operational and supplies four million litres of water daily.

“Once completed, the project will help address water supply disruptions faced by residents in the area,” he said.

On social harmony, Chieng called on the people of Sarawak to continue embracing positive values and safeguarding racial unity to ensure the state’s continued progress and prosperity.
