SARAJEVO: A large wildfire continued to burn in western Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Tuesday as the country remained under widespread heat warnings, with temperatures reaching up to 41 degrees Celsius in the south, reported Xinhua.

The wildfire in the mountainous area of Posusje Municipality has been burning for several days, burning more than 40 hectares of mostly pine forest, according to local authorities. The blaze is spreading through rugged terrain covered with dense pine forest, grass and low vegetation, making firefighting efforts difficult and increasing the risk of further expansion.

Firefighters from Posusje, supported by civil protection teams, mountain rescue personnel and forestry workers, remained on the ground to contain the fire. Two Air Tractor firefighting aircraft operated by a civilian contractor were deployed, while a military helicopter also joined the operations.

Meanwhile, the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, issuing red warnings for parts of the country and orange heat warnings across BiH on Tuesday, warned that high temperatures, combined with dry conditions and occasional strong winds, could increase the risk of wildfires. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
