BINTANGOR: Police have arrested a woman in her 20s for alleged involvement in a job scam in which a victim lost RM1,131.
Meradong district police chief DSP Tansli Mering said the suspect, a local woman, was arrested by a team from the Commercial Crime Investigation Division (BSJK) at about 9.30am yesterday (Sept 21).
He said initial investigations showed that the victim had responded to a part-time job advertisement on Instagram.
“The victim was subsequently added to a group on Telegram and instructed to perform tasks involving liking and rating cosmetics and jewellery.
“Before carrying out the tasks, the victim was required to make a payment of RM1,131 and was promised an attractive commission,” he said in a statement.
Tansli said the victim subsequently suffered a total loss of RM1,131.
He added that police checks found the suspect was also linked to police reports in Kota Bharu, Central Melaka and Ipoh.
However, checks on the suspect’s past records showed that she had no previous criminal record.
The case is being investigated as a fraud case involving the “job scam” modus operandi, with the suspect allegedly acting as an account mule.
Tansli advised members of the public to verify the legitimacy of any job offers and check with the police or relevant authorities before making financial transactions with third parties.
