MIRI: A 33-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run along the Pan Borneo Highway near the Road Transport Department (JPJ) checkpoint at Sekaloh, Niah, early on Saturday.
The woman, a local resident, was attempting to cross the highway when she was hit by a vehicle travelling from Miri towards Niah at about 6am, according to District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah.
The vehicle did not stop after the collision and is yet to be identified, prompting police to appeal for witnesses to come forward.
The victim sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.04am by medical personnel from Batu Niah Health Clinic.
Police have opened an investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Mohd Farhan said investigators are working to establish the identity of the vehicle and driver involved in the collision.
“We urge anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have information that could assist the investigation to come forward,” he said.

Police are also appealing to motorists who were travelling along the Miri-Niah stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway during the early hours of Saturday morning to review any dashboard camera recordings that may help identify the vehicle involved.
