Spicy porridge is a traditional dish that originated with the Malays in Sambas, West Kalimantan, and was later adapted by Sarawakians. It is usually served at the breaking of fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
The porridge is made from refined rice and grated coconut, and the condiment is a delectable combination of shallot, garlic, red chilli pepper, lemongrass, galangal, black pepper, and bay leaves.
Delfieqa Evona Bakri, 33, who hails from Kuching, just started her spicy porridge business last month. She operates during the day and has family members as her assistants.
“I run my business part-time from my house in Taman Palma Indah, Kuching. I only operate when I have time off or on weekends,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.
In terms of packaging, she ensures that the porridge is always fresh by securely storing it in high-quality containers. She also makes sure that her ingredients are fresh and that her preparations are completed on time.
“At night, I’ll prepare the ingredients, which comprise noni leaves, turmeric leaves, yam leaves, bamboo shoots, and pineapple juice. Additional ingredients include potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, long beans, and tofu.

“I’ll cook the beef skin and belly until they’re tender. I’ll then finely chop the chicken and prawn meat. I’ll also prepare 1kg of coconut milk. Next, I will prepare garlic, ginger, and lemongrass for stir-frying. This recipe was given to me by my mother-in-law.
“After everything is ready, I’ll put it in the fridge and cook it the next day,” she said, adding that she usually promotes her business via WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.
Delfieqa works as a part-time tuition teacher. When she is not teaching, she enjoys cooking. She began her business by selling her products on Facebook. Her spicy porridge business takes off from there.
“Initially, the capital was provided by both my sister and my husband. I’m grateful to have my family, particularly my mother, who supports and encourages me in what I do,” she said.
Delfieqa hopes to maintain the exquisite taste and that everyone can enjoy the traditional spicy porridge. If the opportunity arises, she intends to open a restaurant and expand her Nek Oni business.
“My advice to small business owners is that in this business environment, we should all help one another. Every complaint should be used as a booster to keep doing business,” she said.
The price of the spicy porridge she offers ranges from RM14 for 400g to RM65 for 3kg.
