SIBU: A local woman met her tragic end following a two-vehicle collision at Mile 11, Jalan Sibu-Bintulu, here on Saturday night (May 9).
The accident, involving a Perodua Aruz and a Mazda BT-50, happened at around 9.50 pm near Rumah Seri Kenangan.
The impact left the Aruz lying on its side, trapping 66-year-old Yap Li Yun inside the wreckage, while two more female occupants, aged 63 and 76, sustained light injuries. The 56-year-old driver escaped unhurt.
Firefighters from Sungai Merah station were dispatched to the scene following an emergency call.
Upon arrival, they found Yap unconscious and pinned in the front passenger seat of the badly damaged Aruz.
The team proceeded to stabilise the overturned vehicle before using hydraulic rescue tools to cut through the mangled section and free the victim.
Once freed, paramedics confirmed Yap dead at the scene, and her body was later handed over to the police for further action.
The injured victims were taken to the hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, four occupants in the Mazda escaped without any injuries.
Firefighters then carried out flushing works before ending the operation at 11.14 pm.
