BAU: A 35-year-old woman lost RM6,128 after falling victim to a fake scratch-and-win contest advertised on Facebook.

Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A Rahman said the victim came across a live promotion on Facebook under the name “Super Lotto” on June 14 and expressed interest in joining the contest.

He said the victim was instructed to communicate with the organiser through Facebook Messenger and was required to purchase 20 scratch cards to participate.

“After the cards were scratched during a live session, the victim was informed that she had won a cash prize of RM80,400.

“She was then asked to provide her banking details and make several payments before the prize money could be released.

“Believing the offer was genuine, she made four online transfers totalling RM6,128 between June 14 and June 16,” he said.

The payments comprised RM50 for the scratch cards, RM670 as a winning fee, RM1,908 for bank verification and RM3,500 as a service charge.

The victim later received a receipt showing that RM82,308 had supposedly been credited into her account.

However, checks found that no such amount had been deposited.

Realising she had been scammed, the victim lodged a police report on June 19.

Police checks found that one of the bank accounts used by the suspects had been linked to previous scam reports.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
