LAWAS: Construction preparations are underway for Sarawak’s first tunnel, a 2.24-kilometre (km) structure under the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) Phase 2 project.
The tunnel at Bukit Pagon, about 120 km from Lawas town, forms part of Package 4 of the strategic federal project aimed at improving land connectivity between Sarawak and Sabah.
Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak’s Director, Datuk Dr Cassidy Morris, visited the site on Thursday to inspect the project’s progress and preparations for construction works.
In a Facebook post, Cassidy described the project as a milestone for the state.
“Seeing the contractor’s preparations to begin construction work was truly exciting and a source of pride.
“This is the first tunnel in Borneo and symbolises Sarawak’s boldness in venturing into modern engineering challenges,” he said.
The SSLR Phase 2 project involves the construction of a 335.54-km road network that has so far achieved 11.39 per cent physical progress.
