MIRI: Residents of a housing estate in Lutong had an unexpected late-night visitor when a young crocodile was discovered lurking in a drainage ditch along Jalan Perkasa Utama on Tuesday (Jun 2) night.
The reptile, estimated to be about 1.2 metres long, was safely captured by firefighters from the Lutong Fire and Rescue Station with assistance from officers of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).
The Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency call at 10.39pm from a concerned resident who spotted the crocodile in the drain within the residential area.
A fire rescue team was dispatched immediately and arrived at the scene less than 10 minutes later.
Following an assessment of the situation, firefighters worked alongside SFC personnel to secure the reptile using a specialised capture noose.
The operation proceeded smoothly and the crocodile was successfully restrained before being handed over to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation for relocation and further management.
No injuries or property damage were reported.
The incident serves as a reminder for residents living near rivers, wetlands and drainage systems to remain alert to the possible presence of wildlife, particularly during the rainy season when animals may stray from their natural habitats.
The operation was completed shortly after 11pm, with the responding team returning to the station after ensuring the area was safe.
