SERIAN: Sarawak’s younger generation has a vital role to play in ensuring the state’s rich cultural heritage continues to thrive amid the challenges of modernisation, says Datuk Rubiah Wang.
The Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development said preserving traditions and customs was essential in maintaining the identity and uniqueness of Sarawak’s diverse communities, particularly as society becomes increasingly influenced by rapid social change.
“Ngiling Bidai is a symbol of our appreciation for the customs and traditions that have shaped our identity as a community.
“If we fail to preserve this heritage, we risk losing a part of what makes Sarawak unique and special,” she said when officiating the Ngiling Bidai Zon Semeran 2026 celebration at the Kampung Bedega Hall here yesterday (June 13).
Rubiah said celebrations such as Ngiling Bidai continue to serve as an important platform to strengthen ties among communities while ensuring cultural knowledge and values are passed down to the next generation.
She stressed that youths must not only pursue education and skills development, but also cultivate strong moral values and a sense of responsibility towards their communities.
“Young people are the drivers of future development. Their involvement in community and cultural programmes is important in ensuring our traditions remain relevant and continue to flourish,” she added.
