SARATOK: A total of 273 people were evacuated after floodwaters affected Rumah Ason, Tembawai Kapok and SK Ng Atoi in Awik here today.
The evacuees included 164 longhouse residents and 82 students, 15 teachers, and 12 staff from the school.
In a statement, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak said the station in Saratok received a distress call at 11.09 am, with rescue teams arriving on the scene by 11.22 am.
“The rescue team conducted monitoring and assessments at the 21-door longhouse and confirmed that all residents have been moved to a safe location.
“Meanwhile, the students, teachers, and staff of SK Ng Atoi were instructed to leave the school area immediately and relocate to safer areas,” the department said.
Based on the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s (MetMalaysia) website, Saratok district experienced isolated rain in the morning and isolated thunderstorms in afternoon today.
Meanwhile, isolated rain is also expected tonight.
