30 foreign workers busted for multiple immigration offences

SIBU: The Sarawak Immigration Department arrested 30 foreign workers following raids conducted in three different locations last week.

Codenamed as ‘Ops Sapu’ and ‘Ops Mahir’, the operations were launched following intelligence gathered by the department on Jan 11.

Raids were carried out at a plantation workers’ quarters in Lepah, Daro; and industrial premises as well as factories around Lanang and Sungai Merah areas.

The Sibu Immigration Enforcement Unit had inspected the documents of 52 individuals of various nationalities. Of the figure, 30 were arrested for overstaying, lacking valid travel documents, and failing to secure proper permits to stay in Malaysia.

The breakdown of arrests showed that 24 individuals were detained in Daro; and six were detained in Lanang and Sungai Merah areas.

In addition, the department also issued notices to four employers to come forward and provide a statement in the investigation.

All of the detainees are being investigated under the Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

In light of this, the public are encouraged to report any information regarding the presence of undocumented migrants in their areas through online channels or directly to the nearest Immigration Enforcement Office.
