SARIKEI: A total of 31 councillors have been officially sworn in to serve the Maradong and Julau District Council (MDMJ) for the 2025–2028 term.

The ceremony, held today (April 22) at the MDMJ Conference Room, was attended by Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, who commended the councillors for their appointments and urged them to uphold their responsibilities with diligence and integrity.
“Councillors bear the significant responsibility of ensuring the voices of their communities are heard and reflected in every decision made by the local authority.
“You are the eyes and ears of the council, and your role in gathering feedback and delivering it to the council is vital for effective governance.”
The Maradong and Julau District Council oversees three key districts: Meradong, Julau and Pakan, each with distinct geographical and cultural landscapes but united in the shared goal of inclusive development.
The council plays a central role in ensuring that progress reaches every corner of these districts, aligning with Sarawak’s broader vision for holistic growth.

During his address, Tiang called on councillors to act as catalysts for community engagement, emphasising the importance of encouraging public participation in council programmes and activities.
He also stressed the need for close cooperation with council staff and government agencies to enhance service delivery.
Tiang noted the need for the council to embrace digitalisation, in line with the Premier’s vision for transforming the state’s economy and administration through technology.
“The council must move with the times and leverage digital tools to improve the competitiveness of towns and cities in Meradong.”
The event began with the swearing-in of the chairman and deputy chairman, followed by the councillors.
The proceedings also included an anti-corruption pledge, led by MDMJ chairman and Meradong District officer Thomas Geoffrey Kandawang.
