MIRI: Miri police issued 35 traffic summonses after inspecting just 20 motorcycles during an overnight operation targeting road hooliganism and dangerous riding in the city.
The enforcement operation, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, ran from 10pm on Aug 30 until 4.30am on Aug 31.
Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation was carried out at several locations across the city, including Bandar Miri, Jalan Piasau, Jalan Marina, Miri Bypass, Canada Hills and Tanjong Lobang.
Police checked 55 people, comprising 45 men and 10 women, as part of the operation.
The 35 summonses were issued for a range of traffic and technical offences, including riding without a driving licence, illegal structural modifications to motorcycles and modified exhaust systems producing excessive noise.
Other offences included motorcycles without side mirrors or registration numbers, as well as the use of fancy registration numbers.
Farhan said police would not compromise with individuals involved in road hooliganism, particularly activities that could endanger the riders themselves and other road users.
The operation was aimed at preventing activities that could disrupt traffic flow and public order, while reinforcing compliance with road safety regulations.
Police also reminded motorcycle owners that any modifications must comply with the vehicle’s approved specifications.
