KUCHING: The Election Commission’s (EC) proposed recommendations on the review of federal and state constituencies in Sarawak are now available for public inspection, marking the next stage in the state’s electoral delineation exercise.
The proposed recommendations, reviewed by the EC in 2026, include the creation of 17 new state constituencies, bringing the total number of Sarawak DUN seats from 82 to 99.
The EC said there would be no increase in the number of federal constituencies in Sarawak, although a number of federal constituencies are involved in the review and affected by the proposed recommendations.
The 17 proposed new constituencies are N. 02 Jagoi, N. 06 Pasir Pandak, N. 09 Matang, N. 10 Semarak, N. 16 Tabuan Jaya, N. 19 Maong, N. 23 Samarindah, N. 26 Sungai Serin, N. 53 Igan, N. 61 Tanah Mas, N. 64 Sungai Merah, N. 66 Bukit Kemuyang, N. 75 Melekun, N. 84 Batu Niah, N. 89 Permaisuri, N. 90 Tudan and N. 93 Usun Apau.
The review also proposes amendments to the names of one federal constituency and 10 state constituencies.
The federal constituency involved is P. 207 Batang Lassa, formerly known as Igan.
The state constituencies proposed for name changes are N. 01 Serayan, formerly Opar; N. 03 Singai, formerly Tasik Biru; N. 27 Bung Sadung, formerly Tarat; N. 50 Muara Lassa, formerly Semop; N. 52 Matu, formerly Jemoreng; N.67 Rassau, formerly Bawang Assan; N. 80 Jepak Jaya, formerly Jepak; N. 86 Pantai Beraya, formerly Lambir; N. 91 Lopeng, formerly Senadin; and N. 98 Gunong Murud, formerly Ba’kelalan.
According to the notice, the review is based on a total of 2,037,648 electors in the electoral roll determined by the EC and endorsed and gazetted on Jan 29, 2026.
The proposed recommendations, together with the draft constituency plan, may be inspected from Sept 1 to Sept 30, 2026, during normal office hours at locations specified in the notice. They are also available for download through the EC’s official website.
Representations concerning the proposed recommendations may be submitted to the EC within one month from the date of publication of the notice.
Under the Federal Constitution, objections may be submitted by the Sarawak Government, any local authority whose area is wholly or partly included in the affected constituencies, or a body of at least 100 persons whose names appear on the current electoral rolls of the constituencies concerned.
The written or online representations are to be addressed to the Sarawak State Elections Officer at the Office of the State Elections of Sarawak, 11th Floor, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, Jalan Simpang Tiga, 93728 Kuching.
The EC also listed the federal constituencies involved in the revision and affected by the proposed recommendations, including Mas Gading, Santubong, Petra Jaya, Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Kota Samarahan, Puncak Borneo, Serian, Batang Sadong, Batang Lupar, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Betong, Tanjong Manis, Igan, Sarikei, Julau, Kanowit, Lanang, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Hulu Rajang, Bintulu, Sibuti, Miri, Baram, Limbang and Lawas.
The boundaries of federal constituencies not mentioned in the notice will remain unchanged under the proposed recommendations.
