SIBU: A total of 84 traffic summonses were issued and 18 motorcycles seized during an operation to curb street gangsterism and traffic offences here over the weekend.

The operation, dubbed Op Bersepadu Cegah Jenayah Samseng Jalanan, was conducted on Saturday (May 23) from 11 pm until 3 am the following day around the Sibu town centre and Jalan Awang Ramli Amit.

Sibu district police chief ACP Azari Miskon said the operation was coordinated by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department in collaboration with several other departments and police stations.

“The operation aimed to enhance police presence in hotspot areas while preventing street crime activities and various traffic offences.

“A total of 20 officers and personnel from various departments and police stations took part in the operation,” he said in a statement yesterday (May 24).

Throughout the operation, police inspected 55 motorcycles and screened 65 individuals.

Azari added that 84 traffic summonses were issued for various offences, including modified exhausts, absence of registration plates, lack of side mirrors, and driving without a licence.

In addition, 18 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The district police chief said similar operations would continue from time to time as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime, improve compliance with traffic laws, and ensure public safety and order are maintained.
