KUCHING: AirAsia Berhad will be increasing its flight frequency for the Kuching-Sibu-Kuching route from the existing seven flights weekly to 21 flights weekly, or from one flight daily to three flights daily.

Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin revealed that the new flight frequency of 21 flights weekly would take effect on August 1.

“In addition, AirAsia has increased its flights for the Kuching-Sibu-Kuching route to two flights daily for July 17, 19, 24, 26, 29, 30, and 31,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Lee pointed out that the Kuching-Sibu-Kuching flight route was currently served only by AirAsia Berhad.

He said the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MoTS) had received feedback from the public that the limited flight frequency of seven flights weekly or one flight daily along this route had caused inconveniences to them and they had requested for more flights.

“Based on the feedback received, MoTS wrote to AirAsia on July 2 to increase the flight frequency,” he said.

With the increase in flight frequency and since the recovery movement control order (RMCO) was still in place, Lee urged all passengers to continue complying with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) approved by the National Security Council (MKN) and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the state.

“I believe the increase in flight frequency will not only meet the public’s needs, but more importantly, help to accelerate the recovery of the state’s economy, especially the domestic tourism industry,” said Lee.

On behalf of the state government, he thanked AirAsia Berhad and the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) for their prompt response to MoTS’ request.
