KUCHING: March 8 is one of the most significant dates for women all around the world as it is International Woman’s Day.

Celebrated annually, it has become a focal point on women’s rights, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights as well as abuse and violence against women.

Despite gaining many of their rights over the years, for instance, the right to vote, the right to work and the right to drive, the fight is not over in many parts of the world.

The New Sarawak Tribune recently spoke to some Malaysian women on their hopes and aspirations and their advice to all the women out there.

BIBI SAKIRA, 33, DECATHLON SERVICE TEAM LEADER

Have faith because beneath your heart lies a strong will that is enough to embrace your uniqueness. Prioritise self growth and we’re stronger when we empower each other.

HELENA DORIS SIBINGAN, 58, RETIRED EDUCATOR

My advise for all women out there is to be strong in whatever they do, prepare themselves for changes in their surrounding and to always be thankful with what they have. My advice for younger women is to prepare to learn the foundation of life based on morality, and mental health should be prioritised so that they would not be easily pressured.

RUMY AMIRA ROSDI, 28, EDUCATOR

To me, a woman is a wonderful, strong, unique and perfect figure. Regardless of who she is, where she comes from, every woman in this world will continue to inspire everyone in her circle. Love all women.

EZRIN GHAZALI, 27, CONTENT CREATOR CUM FORMAT DEVELOPER

“My hope for all women in our country is that they will be given a chance to create their own lane and success, in line with the opposite gender so that we can stand here as one of the best contributors to the well-being and success of our country. And my advice to women is to be brave, be open and most importantly, always apologise if you are wrong.

NUR IZZNI FILZZA OSMAN, 27, CUSTOMER SERVICE SPECIALIST

My hopes and aspiration as a woman in our country is for our voices to be heard. If women are given a chance in leadership regardless of type of organisation or institution, the gender would not be ignored. My advice to younger women is, do not be afraid to try things outside your comfort zone. Do not be afraid to fail and do not be afraid to fight for what is right for you.

PHYLLIS MONTEGRAI, 30, PRESIDENT ANGLICAN DIOCESAN YOUTH COUNCIL

I want a safe and stable Malaysia, economically and politically. My hope is that women in our country regardless of religion, race and background be treated fairly in whatever they are attaining especially in the area of economic empowerment and nation building. My advice for younger women is to be good example by putting education as one of the most vital aspects in their lives as it is the key to social change that allows them to understand their rights and responsibilities to their family, society and nation.
