KUCHING: The installation of new signage at Kampung Boyan, Kampung Gersik and Kampung Sourabaya (BGS) is not merely a location marker, but a symbol of heritage identity that highlights the unique history, culture and pride of the Seberang Hilir community.
The initiative, implemented by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) under the Green Kampung Heritage Beautification and Cleanliness programme, aims to enhance the landscape of heritage villages with a more structured and attractive design that reflects the historical and cultural values of the local community.
The signage serves not only as wayfinding markers but also as a symbol of ongoing efforts to preserve the heritage of Kampung Boyan, Kampung Gersik and Kampung Sourabaya, which are well known for their history and the unique cultural identity of the Malay community in Seberang Hilir.
According to an UKAS report, the project is part of a Public Participation Project adapted from best practices in Singapore, involving active community participation at every stage of implementation, including planning, development and maintenance.
In addition to strengthening the identity of heritage villages, the initiative also supports community-based tourism and local economic development, in line with efforts to position Seberang Hilir as a more competitive and liveable heritage destination.
The launching ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for the Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
