SIBU: What is the secret to good photography?
ccording to a master photographer Edwin Ong Wee Kee, one should learn the art from experienced photographers.
“When you are out of idea when taking pictures, you can actually observe the art pieces of other master.
By imitating the master’s work, you are learning the techniques and at the same time, discover your own way and personality. Then, you will create your own wonderful innovative artwork,” said Ong, who is Sibu Photographer Association president, at the closing of the Melanau Photo Editing Workshop recently.
Photography, he said is not as easy as people perceived to be, due to numerous challenges or frustrations.
“You may feel stuck or bored. You may wonder if your pictures are good or original enough. Don’t worry, we all go through these phases. The important thing is never giving up and always keep trying,” he advised.
Ong also gave a good account concerning young photographers during their photography session at the Kaul Festival in Mukah from March 10 to 14.

He said they were very creative and eager to learn and explore new things.
“They have their own appreciation on beauty and art, and not afraid of expressing their opinions and emotions. Working with them really inspired me to improve my skills and vision.
“When I saw a good picture taken by them, I was happier than them, as if they are my own pictures,” he said.
The photography session was sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak.
Among those present at the closing ceremony were the ministry’s Head of Events Section Nasir Lariwoo, members of Sibu Photographer Association, Advisor of Photography and Videography Club of University of Technology (UTS) Muhammad Oliver Ensor, lecturers, staff, students of UTS and participants.
