KUCHING: A visually impaired drug addict has been fined RM3,500 or faces eight months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court for assaulting his wife and making threats in the children’s ward of Sarawak General Hospital.

Sa’adi, a 46-year-old labourer from Kampung Meranek, Kota Samarahan, pleaded guilty to the charges on Thursday (June 8).

Under Section 323 of the Penal Code, he was fined RM2,000 or five months in prison for intentionally causing injury to his 35-year-old wife on June 2 at around 6.30pm in the hospital ward.

He was also charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for making criminal threats to injure the victim at the same place and on the same day at around 7.15pm. For this charge, he received a fine of RM1,500 or three months in prison.

According to the facts presented in court, the incident occurred after a verbal argument between Sa’adi and his wife in the children’s ward, where their youngest daughter was admitted.

The couple’s daughter witnessed Sa’adi hitting her mother’s hand. The victim received medical treatment, and examination results revealed a soft tissue injury in her left arm.

Following the incident, Sa’adi left the ward but later contacted the victim, threatening to steal their belongings if she did not give him her bank card.

The complainant, the couple’s daughter, filed a police report, leading to Sa’adi’s arrest on the same day.

A urine screening conducted on Sa’adi tested positive for methamphetamine. The prosecution of the case was handled by prosecuting officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad while Sa’adi did not have legal representation.
