KUCHING: A 22-year-old jobless youth who had challenged his father to a fight in one of his frequent rampages will spend the next one year cooling off in prison.
Hafarizan Johari admitted to shattering the window glass and damaging the door in frustration when his father did not take the bait.
Magistrate Zaiton Anuar handed him the penalty after he confessed to causing RM250 worth of damage at the family home in Bako on June 26.
Based on the facts of the case, Hafarizan, who is the youngest child, flew into a rage out of the blue, uttering vulgar words to his father and challenging him to a fight.
He had wielded a kerambit (curved knife) in the course of his anger.
The court heard that he threw stones at the window glass and forcefully slammed the house door when his father did not respond to him.
Concerned for his safety and that of other family members, his father filed a police report, leading to Hafarizan’s arrest on July 1.
It was learnt that he had frequently gone on rampages, causing fear among family members.
In addition, according to his father, he was involved in drug abuse and had previously reported him to the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), but no action was taken by the agency.
The prosecution was conducted by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang.
