MIRI: The Sarawak Coast Guard (SCG) has received three more patrol vessels to complement the existing three in safeguarding the interests of the state.
The handover was held at Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) headquarters here on Sunday.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report on Monday, Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datu Buckland Bangik, SCG plays a crucial role in safeguarding the state’s waters including areas of importance to the oil and gas industry.
Buckland said, especially Miri and Bintulu, there are many activities being carried out in coastal areas which relate to the oil and gas industry and it is important for Sarawak to ensure these areas are safe.
Buckland was representing State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki at the handing over ceremony.
He added, UKPS will also work together with all relevant enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and Civil Defence Force (APM) to make sure coastal areas are safe for investment activities.
The first three vessels were handed over on Nov 18 last year in Kuching.
All six vessels will be launched on Tuesday (July 18) here by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
