SIBU: A total of 347 graduates will receive their scrolls during the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) 7th convocation here.
A total of 16 graduates will obtain their Masters’ and PhD degrees while another 331 will get their Bachelor’s degrees.
UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khiruddin Abdul Hamid said the convocation ceremony will also witness one outstanding graduate receiving the prestigious Chancellor Award and another two graduates receiving the Academic Award.
“Meanwhile, a total of 34 graduates will receive various awards as listed in the programme book,” he said at the first session that was held Saturday (August 5).
The awards are Yayasan Sarawak Excellence Award, Industry Excellence Award, Sarawak Energy Excellent Award, Sarawak Energy Leadership Award, BEM President Award and Book Awards.
Khiruddin said the UTS Convocation holds significant meaning, not only in celebrating the university’s 10th anniversary but also for the first time it is being held in its majestic Chancellor Hall,
“All graduating students attending this convocation ceremony, you are creating history for being the first graduates of UTS to receive your degrees in this Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud,” he said.
Khiruddin stressed that as a young university, UTS has been recognised as one of the most progressive and fast-growing universities in the country.
“In 2022, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg introduced special scholarship and bursary schemes for our students.
“All local students from Sarawak and also those from outside Sarawak are given a full scholarship to enrol in the one-year Foundation programmes at UTS.
“Subsequently, all Sarawakian students who continue their undergraduate study at UTS will be given a 50 per cent scholarship of the tuition fees and if they decide to continue to pursue their study either for a masters’ or PhD degree, they will also be given the 50 per cent scholarship,” he said.
Khiruddin said that UTS is also collaborating with Yayasan Sarawak to offer a special bursary scheme for the low-income group (B40).
“We are offering scholarships of up to 80 per cent of the tuition fee to those under this category,” he said.
Khiruddin said that they are grateful to the various corporations, local foundations (Yayasan), and other sponsoring organisations that have been providing scholarships and financial assistance to students.
“I am very happy to mention that beginning of last year, Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan, recognising the progress and potential of UTS, has also given financial support to our students,” he said.
Also present was the Chairman of University Technology Sarawak (UTS) Dr Annuar Rapaee.
