Sebati’s donation of modern machine will enable up to 400 operations yearly
KUCHING: Thanks to the Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati), the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) will be able to perform 300 to 400 vitreo-retinal surgeries yearly.
The hospital took delivery of a new state-of-the-art vitrectomy machine donated by the
association.
Sabati president Datuk Amar Juma’ani TunTuanku Bujang handed over the machine to SGH at a simple ceremony recently.
Head of Ophthalmology Department Dr Intan Gudom said the machine would be used to conduct delicate eye operations.
“It will facilitate 300 to 400 vitreo-retinal surgeries per year. “The donation is extremely timely in view of the alarming increase in the number of diabetic patients experiencing visual impairment,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He said both local and visiting sub-specialty surgeons would conduct the operations for patients from throughout Sarawak.
Meanwhile, SGH director Dr Chin Zin Hing said before this, there were only two machines. “Now the hospital has an additional new vitrectomy machine which is able to help more people,” he said.
Among those present at the handing over ceremony were Sabati deputy president Puan Sri Corinne Masing, deputy president Datuk Dayang Morliah Datuk Awang Daud and honorary secretary Datin Dr Zaliha Abdullah.
