KUCHING: The Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) Sarawak Regional Office, in collaboration with private hospitals in Sarawak organised the Diagnosis-Related Group (CASEMIX) programme to strengthen the healthcare ecosystem in the region.

In a statement, MPC highlighted Normah Medical Specialist Hospital (NMSC) as a proactive participant in this initiative.

The hospital’s comprehensive capacity-building programme was held between December 2023 and January 2024, involving various departments.

CASEMIX system lead consultant and developer, Prof Datuk Dr Syed Mohamed Aljunid said the system can bring substantial cost savings of up to 20 percent in operational costs for hospital.

“The key is enhancing productivity through efficient resource utilisation and applying competitive tariffs,” he said.

CASEMIX systematically categorises patients based on clinical similarity and resource homogeneity. It is widely adopted in several countries including neighbouring nations such as Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Dr Syed Mohamed who is also lead facilitator for the CASEMIX pilot programme in Sarawak said support from hospital top managements is crucial to ensure the programme’s success along with the formation of implementation committees within the hospitals.

Meanwhile, NMSC expressed their appreciation towards MPC’s support, adding that the new system will bring long-term benefits and improve service delivery.

“The data analysed through CASEMIX will be pivotal for budgeting, forecasting, and identifying areas of improvement to ensure superior patient care,” it said.
