KOTA SAMARAHAN: The late Senate President Datuk Mutang Tagal was described as an influential figure to the Lun Bawang community, contributing towards the development of Sarawak.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the late Mutang was dedicated in serving the community in his capacity as an elected representative, lawyer and social activist.
“He became the Bukit Mas MP from 1982 to 1990. He was involved in social organisations notably when he became the Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OUCCI) president.
“His sudden demise were very much felt by all of us,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the Samarahan Food and Culture Festival (SFCF) at Aiman Mall here on last night (May 10).
The Senate President passed away at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur yesterday at 11.46 am. He was 70.
He had been undergoing treatment after falling ill during a working trip to Azerbaijan on May 6.
He became the first Orang Ulu of Lun Bawang ethnicity to be appointed as Senate President on Feb 19.
The late Mutang’s wake will be held at the lobby of Nirvana Centre Kuala Lumpur today (May 11) from 10am to 2pm.
On Sunday (May 12), his remains will be brought to BEM Airport Road Church, Miri.
