KAPIT: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has mooted building a town square near Fort Sylvia here as a symbol of unity.
“I understand that the police station will soon be relocated to a new area, and the current station (near Fort Sylvia) might no longer be in use.
“We may develop a Kapit Square here, which will be a green area with significant historical value, as the Kapit Peace Signing Ceremony took place at this site.
“Therefore, we need to modernise this park as a symbol of unity in Kapit and Sarawak,” he said during the 100th Anniversary of the Peace-Making Ceremony, officiated by the Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, at Fort Sylvia on Sunday (Dec 8).
He added that he would discuss the proposal further with the Works Minister, who is also the Kapit MP, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, as well as all assembly members.
“We will need to secure additional funds to develop Kapit, making it a significant location in the interior, equipped with modern facilities and connected by road networks that will drive Kapit’s economic prosperity,” he said.
He emphasised that the Sarawak government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will continue to develop Kapit and reiterated that Sarawak has a bright future under a stable political environment.
“Therefore, we must safeguard our Gabungan Parti Sarawak. In the context of ICT, GPS (navigation) is also crucial.
“If there is no GPS, we will be lost. But Sarawak will not be lost as long as there is ‘GPS’ in Sarawak. Together, we will build our state,” he said.
Also present were Wan Junaidi’s wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman and Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
