KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) hosted the inaugural lecture of Professor Dr Chen Chwen Jen, an esteemed expert in Learning Design and Technology, at DeTAR PUTRA yesterday (Dec 19).
Her lecture, themed ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Learning,’ delved into how AI is reshaping educational landscapes and transforming teaching and learning processes.
Chen, with nearly three decades of experience in technology-enhanced learning, emphasised AI’s potential in personalising education, generating diverse content, and redefining the roles of educators and learners.
She also introduced her theoretical model, which demonstrates how generative AI enhances cognition, builds knowledge networks, and supports innovative learning strategies.
Her lecture highlighted practical strategies for integrating AI in education, from redesigning assessments to fostering essential AI-related literacies and ethical practices.
She projected future trends, including the rise of personalised AI tutors and educators evolving as ‘prompt engineers,’ capable of fostering meaningful AI-human collaboration.
A key highlight was the demonstration of LearnSphere, a Large Language Model (LLM)-based AI learning application developed by Associate Professor Dr. Teh Chee Siong and student Tan Aik Hua.
This offline-capable system safeguards data confidentiality while providing contextual AI assistance, reflecting the Cognitive Science programme’s commitment to real-world AI applications.
The event also celebrated the launch of Chen’s latest book, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Learning, officiated by UNIMAS Board of Directors chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie.
The book explores AI’s evolving role in education, serving as a vital resource for educators, researchers, and policymakers navigating the AI-driven landscape.
