KUCHING: Newcastle took a huge step towards the Carabao League Cup final with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the first leg of the semi-final on Tuesday.
Goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon handed the Magpies a commanding lead, with Isak’s strike followed by his assist for Gordon’s second.
This victory, Newcastle’s seventh consecutive win, leaves them in a strong position heading into the return leg next month on February 5.
Isak’s contribution proved vital as Arsenal, despite dominating possession, struggled to convert their chances. Mikel Arteta’s side failed to find the back of the net, with Gabriel Martinelli coming closest, hitting the post after a strong run.
The home team made several changes from their 1-1 draw against Brighton, welcoming back Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard, and Martinelli.
However, Arsenal’s lack of a clinical striker compared to Isak’s sharpness was evident, and they were punished by a long free-kick that Isak expertly converted.
The second goal came after the break when Isak’s shot was parried by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, setting up Gordon for a rebound finish.
Despite missing several key players, including Bukayo Saka, Arsenal were unable to break down Newcastle’s defense, even after Havertz missed a glaring header.
Eddie Howe’s team defended resolutely, switching to a 5-5-0 formation for the final stages, content to protect their lead.
With a two-goal advantage, Newcastle will be confident heading into the second leg, as Arsenal face a tough challenge to overturn the deficit and reach the final.
