MIRI:  Local police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu has urged residents celebrating Chinese New Year to prioritise home security by informing the police if their homes are left unattended during the festive period.

Speaking during the monthly assembly at Miri police headquarters (IPD Miri) today, ACP Alexson emphasised the importance of vigilance amid potential crime and natural disasters in the district.

“In preparation for the festive season, I encourage residents taking extended holidays to notify the nearest police station or use the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) app. This will assist us in monitoring homes left vacant during the celebrations,” he said.

Alexson also highlighted concerns about the ongoing northeast monsoon season, which is expected to bring daily rainfall and could lead to flooding and landslides in parts of Miri.

“We remain prepared to face weather-related challenges, ensuring optimal deployment of personnel and assets in collaboration with relevant government agencies.

“Our resources, including boats and outboard engines, are in a state of readiness to address both natural disasters and criminal activity,” he said.

He urged the police force to enhance crime prevention efforts, particularly in areas prone to criminal activities and drug abuse.

“We must be proactive in monitoring our administrative areas and increasing patrols in crime hotspots,” he added.

The assembly also recognised the achievements of 14 officers, who were presented with certificates of excellence.

Deputy Miri police chief Supt Nurashyikin Abdullah was also present.
