BINTULU: A temporary drainage pipe is being installed to address severe water-logging in front of Meridian Central here, following continuous rainfall and ongoing road improvement works.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the measure aims to channel excess water to the drainage system on the opposite side, reducing the risk of flash floods and easing traffic congestion.
He assured that the Public Works Department (PWD) and contractors are working on-site to implement the solution swiftly.
“Since last night, a lot of water has accumulated on the roads in this area, slowing traffic flow and causing congestion.
“The temporary drainage pipe crossing the road will relieve pressure on the existing clogged culvert, which has significantly restricted drainage capacity.
“This should help prevent further flooding in the area,” Tiong said in a Facebook post.
The Bintulu MP added that to facilitate the emergency works, one lane leading from Medan Jaya towards Meridian Central has been temporarily closed.
He assured that the contractor team is committed to completing the work efficiently while minimising inconvenience to road users.
“A well-functioning road drainage system is critical to maintaining the safety of residents while reducing disruption to daily lives.
“Any risks that could lead to flooding must be addressed swiftly to prevent further harm to public welfare and the smooth running of our city,” he said.
As the monsoon and rainy seasons overlap, Tiong stressed the importance of vigilance and swift action to mitigate potential flooding risks in Bintulu.
He said he has instructed relevant departments to remain on high alert and respond promptly to emergencies.
The minister also called for public understanding and cooperation during the emergency works, expressing gratitude to the agencies and teams involved in managing the situation effectively.
“We will continue to monitor the drainage situation closely,” he added.
