MIRI: Authorities are intensifying efforts to locate 77 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates from SMK Bekenu, who are among those affected by severe flooding in the Sibuti area.

The rescue operation comes as floodwaters continue to rise, cutting off roads and displacing residents.

Deputy Minister of Health Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni, who is also Sibuti MP when met here on Saturday, highlighted the urgency of the situation.

“Yesterday, we managed to bring back two SPM candidates who had returned to their villages. Today, our focus is on ensuring all 77 candidates can sit for their exams on Monday,” he said.

The extreme weather conditions have led to widespread disruptions, with landslides and impassable roads complicating evacuation efforts. According to Lukanisman, approximately 150 people have been severely affected by the floods.

“For SMK Suai, there is a proposal from the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to accommodate students in hostels, but in Bekenu, we do not have such facilities as it is a day school. This presents a major challenge in ensuring students can safely take their exams,” he explained.

Beyond ensuring students reach their examination centres, authorities are also working to secure essential supplies for flood victims.
“Food supplies are sufficient, but we are in need of donations such as bath rugs, pads, mats, mattresses, and blankets. Psychosocial support is also crucial, particularly for children experiencing trauma,” Lukanisman added.

He urged volunteers, particularly those who can assist the elderly, to come forward and support the ongoing rescue efforts. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has been directed to provide mental health assistance to those affected by the disaster.

The flood crisis continues to develop, with authorities closely monitoring the situation as they work to ensure the safety and well-being of all those impacted.
