BETONG: The road construction project linking the Batang Lupar 02 Bridge to Betong, a key section of the Sarawak Second Trunk Road (Package B4), has reached 50.23 per cent completion.
Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said that the project is crucial as the new 28km route will provide a shorter alternative to the existing Pan Borneo Highway.
However, he urged the contractor to address minor delays and, if necessary, increase manpower to keep the project on track.
“Safety must also be a priority, especially since part of this alignment involves the existing road from the Betong junction to Betong town,” he said during a briefing and site inspection with the Betong Public Works Department (PWD) on Monday (Feb 24).
The Layar assemblyman called for improved maintenance and safety measures following recent accidents caused by damaged roads in the project area.
During the briefing, Verde FM Sdn Bhd’s representative Wan Suleiman Wan Sadi reported that the project’s physical progress stands at 50.23 per cent — slightly behind schedule by 1.37 per cent.
The briefing also stressed the need to accelerate implementation to meet the original completion target of June 2026.
Also present were Betong Division Resident Richard Michael Abunawas, Betong PWD Division Engineer Jason Ng Boon Tuan, Betong District Officer representative Audri Choo, as well as project officers and contractors.
