KUCHING: The Malaysian Media Clubs Coalition (GKMM) has extended its congratulations and appreciation to all Members of Parliament who supported and passed the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Bill 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The passage of the Malaysian Media Council Bill has been highly anticipated by media practitioners across the country in efforts to elevate the status of journalism as a profession in Malaysia.
“Among other aspects, this bill addresses the future of the media industry itself, ensuring it remains competitive and resilient in line with the rapid growth of the digital era,” said GKMM president Mohamad Fauzi Ishak.
He added that various welfare issues that have long affected media practitioners will now receive due attention and prompt action, allowing them to be effectively addressed.
“The establishment of the Malaysian Media Council will provide a platform for media practitioners, the media industry, and the government to come together, discuss, and find solutions while shaping the future direction of journalism in Malaysia.
“GKMM hopes the government will prioritise full participation and involvement from media professionals in the Malaysian Media Council, particularly in making key decisions that impact the industry’s direction and future.”
A special appreciation was also extended to the Ministry of Communications, particularly Minister Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching, for their commitment and dedication in ensuring the bill was successfully tabled and passed.
