SIBU: Police dismantled a fuel smuggling syndicate with the arrest of 10 local and foreign suspects at a storage facility on Jalan Ding Lik Kwong yesterday (Feb 27).
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said officers discovered 29,370 litres of diesel at the facility, valued at approximately RM63,145.50.
“We also seized various other pieces of equipment, bringing the total value of the confiscated items to RM575,693.50,” he told reporters after the Sibu district police headquarters (IPD Sibu) monthly assembly today.
He added that the suspects and seized items had been handed over to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) for further investigation.
Asked whether the case was linked to a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) case involving two siblings operating a petrol station business in Sibu, Zulkipli stressed that it was unrelated.
Meanwhile, in his speech at the programme, Zulkipli emphasised that his personnel must master modern investigative techniques and the use of advanced equipment to enhance efficiency in criminal investigations.
“The rise in cybercrime requires us to be better prepared with the relevant knowledge to tackle this threat.
“Therefore, we must continue to strengthen discipline, enhance professionalism, and uphold integrity in every aspect of our duties, because we are not merely law enforcers but also protectors of society,” he added.
He also expressed his gratitude for the dedication of Sibu police officers who have worked tirelessly during the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) to ensure public safety and the smooth running of operations throughout the period.
“This achievement proves that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is always ready and capable of facing challenges in any situation.
“Although this special assignment has been completed, we must not be complacent. The post-flood period also requires attention, particularly in assisting with the recovery of affected areas and ensuring that the safety of residents is restored.
“I hope that all officers and personnel of IPD Sibu remain committed to their daily duties as usual with the same spirit,” he said.
