KAPIT: A 58-year-old man was fined RM1,500, in default one month’s imprisonment, by the Magistrate’s Court here on yesterday (Wednesday, July 15) after pleading guilty to making a false police report.

The man was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code for providing false information to a public servant.

Kapit Police Chief, DSP Rohana Nanu, said the accused had lodged a report at the Kapit Police Station claiming that his workers’ salary money and an old gold chain had been stolen from a room he rented in Kapit town.

“He alleged losses amounting to RM275,000, prompting police to open an investigation under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.

“However, investigations found that the accused failed to produce any evidence to support his claim and had given doubtful statements during the probe,” she said in a statement

She added that following the completion of the investigation, the case was referred to the deputy public prosecutor, who directed that the man be charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code.

Rohana reminded the public that stern action would continue to be taken against individuals who deliberately lodge false police reports.

She said such actions not only waste police time, manpower and logistical resources, but also hamper enforcement efforts against genuine criminal cases.

Rohana urged the public to provide truthful and accurate information to the authorities, and cooperate with the police by channelling information on criminal activities to help maintain public safety and order in Kapit.
