KUCHING: Transformation is important in the media industry, particularly as journalists navigate technological advancements and industry shifts.
In stating this Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA) president Ronnie Teo drew parallels to snakes shedding their skin to embrace growth and renewal.
“It is therefore no surprise that all of us have had to adapt to change to keep up with the latest technology and trends that are keeping us in check today,” he said at the KDJA Chinese New Year dinner here Friday (Feb 28).
The event, graced by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, acknowledged the resilience and adaptability of media practitioners.
Teo said have media agencies continued to evolve and adapt in the ever-changing landscape of journalism.
“As many are aware, it hasn’t been an easy journey for us media practitioners, especially here in Kuching, with many of us facing cost-cutting measures, downsizing, retrenchment and operational changes such as closing of printing sections,” he said.
Despite these challenges, KDJA remains committed to advocating for media welfare, he said.
“As part of the Federation of Sarawak Journalists Association and the government-led Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM), the association continues to push for initiatives that benefit journalists across the state,”he said.
Teo also highlighted KDJA’s involvement in national-level media welfare programmes, including engagement sessions with Bernama to facilitate financial aid through Tabung Hawana for media professionals in need.
Looking ahead, KDJA is set to participate in a courtesy call with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the coming weeks to explore further collaboration between the media and government.
Additionally, Teo provided updates on the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024, recently passed in the Dewan Rakyat, which aims to safeguard media freedom and promote self-regulation within the industry.
“The association also anticipates internal changes this year, with elections slated for March and plans to establish a dedicated office space to enhance its operations.
“We hope that the government will support this initiative,”he said.
