MIRI: Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) collected approximately RM143 million in zakat contributions in 2024, with over RM112 million distributed to eligible recipients, says its general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie.

Speaking at the Iftar Perdana event here yesterday (Mar 10), Abang Mohd highlighted the significance of last year’s distribution, which benefited more than 87,800 individuals.

“The more we collect from those eligible to pay zakat, the greater the amount we can distribute, ultimately benefiting a larger number of people,” he said.

For 2025, TBS has set a zakat collection target of RM145 million, although Abang Mohd noted that contributions depend on the willingness and commitment of individuals to pay.

“Once people develop the habit of contributing, they tend to continue doing so. We anticipate that over RM100 million will be distributed again this year, benefiting between 80,000 and 90,000 recipients,” he added.

As part of its Ramadan outreach, TBS is organising Iftar Perdana events across Sarawak, including in Sri Aman, Sibu, Miri, and Kuching on March 21. Additionally, throughout Ramadan, TBS will continue its assistance programmes, supporting those in need, including recipients of zakat fitrah and zakat harta.

At the Iftar Perdana event in Miri, financial aid totalling RM72,337 was distributed to 231 asnaf recipients under TBS’s care, including tahfiz students and a religious learning centre, to ease their burdens during Ramadan and in preparation for Syawal.

As of January 2025, TBS has already disbursed RM8.3 million through its four key programmes: strengthening knowledge traditions, developing Islamic institutions, enhancing ummah welfare, and improving skills for the ummah.
