KUCHING: Eighteen members were officially sworn in as part of the Padawan Child Council at the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) headquarters today.

They were sworn in before Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, MPP Chairman Tan Kai, and MPP Deputy Chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali.

According to Tan, the formation of the Padawan Child Council is a clear indicator to ensure that children’s voices and opinions are heard and taken into consideration.

He noted that the 18 members represent various areas within the MPP’s jurisdiction, ensuring broad representation and that no child is left behind.

Tan also highlighted the inclusive nature of the council, with members from diverse age groups, genders, races, religions, economic backgrounds and academic standings.

“MPP is honoured to train and develop these young leaders so they can contribute meaningfully to community development and nation-building.

“It is time to move beyond ‘business as usual’.

“We must recognise the vital role of children in nation-building, as the future belongs to them,” he said in his speech.

Tan added that the Child Council will participate in programs and projects that directly affect them under the guidance of MPP, which will empower them to speak up and take a more active role at the council level.

“For instance, at the school level, the Child Council can contribute to improving accessibility to schools from their homes and ensuring a safe learning environment.

“Meanwhile, at the council’s level, they can be involved in the development of parks, libraries and other facilities.

“This reflects MPP’s commitment to nurturing and empowering children so they can grow, participate and thrive,” he added.
