Young man killed, teen injured in traffic-light crash

SIBU: A motorcyclist was killed while another sustained injuries in a fatal collision along Jalan Sibu Amber, Sibu Jaya last night.

Sibu police chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, confirmed that the accident happened around 9.45 pm and involved a Honda RS150 motorcycle and a Modenas Kriss motorcycle.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Modenas rider was stopping at a traffic light when the Honda motorcycle, which was coming from behind, crashed into the left side of the Modenas before skidding and hitting a road barrier.

“As a result, the Honda rider, a 20-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics due to head injuries.

“Meanwhile, the 15-year-old Modenas rider sustained bodily injuries, and was rushed to Sibu Hospital for further treatment,” he said in a statement.

The deceased’s body was also taken to the hospital for a post-mortem.

Zulkipli added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous riding.

Meanwhile, firefighters from Sibu Jaya station were dispatched to the scene to assist in clearing the debris to ensure that the road was safe for other motorists.
