KUCHING: Pay and Go Sdn Bhd has warned motorists against concealing or altering their vehicle registration plates, which are used for parking payment and enforcement in the city.
The warning came after a social media post showed a vehicle with part of its registration plate allegedly covered with tape.
Under Kuching’s current parking system, motorists make payments through the Pay and Go application using their vehicle registration numbers, replacing the previous parking coupon system.
Pay and Go said any deliberate attempt to cover, alter or conceal a vehicle registration plate would be taken seriously.
“Pay and Go will not hesitate to document and report such cases to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and police for investigation and appropriate action,” it said in a statement.
It said such actions may constitute an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).
Depending on the circumstances and offence established by the authorities, penalties may range from RM300 to RM20,000, while serious cases involving intentional alteration or deception could carry imprisonment.
“We will not speculate on the intention behind such behaviour. However, deliberately preventing a vehicle from being properly identified raises legitimate enforcement and public safety concerns,” it said.
Pay and Go stressed that concealing or altering vehicle registration plates would not be tolerated.
“No hidden plates. No altered plates. No compromise on public safety. Together, let’s keep Kuching a smart and safe city,” it added.
