MIRI: A 48-year-old man has been sentenced to two days in prison and fined RM500 by the Miri Magistrates’ Court after admitting to possessing a set of tools police believe could be used to break into homes.
The case stemmed from a patrol on Aug 11, when officers led by the Miri Airport’s’ police chief stopped a man cycling in what they described as suspicious circumstances outside a residential property on Jalan Interhill 14.
A search of his backpack turned up a machete, a screwdriver, a saw, pliers, an Allen key and several spanners. He was arrested on the spot.
In a separate hearing on the same day, the man was also fined RM2,000 – with a default sentence of three months’ jail – over a drug offence dating back to April 2019, when a urine test returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Police said he had originally been released on bail but failed to appear in court to face the charge, leaving the case unresolved for more than seven years until it was brought back before the magistrate this week.
