KUCHING: The annual charity event Run to Save Lives 5.0, organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Kuching Branch, achieved a record-breaking milestone this year with more than 2,300 participants, the highest number since the event began five years ago.
The flag-off ceremony was officiated on behalf of Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
His text of speech was delivered by Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting.
In his message, Dr Sim expressed his appreciation to MRC Kuching for their unwavering efforts in organising such a meaningful event that not only raises vital funds but also increases public awareness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) within the community.
“I was informed that the number of participants has consistently grown each year, and this year it surpassed 2,300. This is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the organisers,” he said.
Dr Sim also lauded the involvement of 28 primary and secondary schools in Kuching, stating that their participation reflects the growing enthusiasm among young people to contribute to community initiatives.
“We need a young generation that excels not only in academics but also demonstrates social responsibility and a willingness to contribute to the betterment of Sarawak,” he added.
During the event, organising chairman Dr Chow Chi-Min revealed that this year’s fundraising efforts successfully raised RM100,000.
Dr Sim further emphasised the importance of enhancing public knowledge of CPR and AED usage, especially in light of the rising cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
He reiterated the Sarawak government’s commitment to supporting such awareness campaigns and encouraged close cooperation between the government, non-governmental organisations and private sector stakeholders.
He concluded by congratulating the organising committee for their hard work and expressed hope that Run to Save Lives would continue to grow in the years to come, attracting even greater participation, particularly among the youth.
Also present were Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin and other distinguished guests.
